Love them or loathe them, all of us have a certain kind of people in our lives, the hard-to-buy-gifts-for-them folks. They have everything they want, or that money can buy, and can therefore make birthday and holiday gifting a frustrating experience. So before you give up and go for that generic gift card, try these ideas for a change!
1) Make it personal
Money doesn’t buy everything – yes, it not only sounds good, it’s a lesson holds true as well. And more often than not, it’s the personal touch that money can’t buy. A hand-made gift, a few hours of your time, the effort to collect old pictures and make a picture album. A gift that takes thought, time and creativity, one that has a bit of your soul in it. Gifts that remind the person of their childhood/youth are usually a good beginning when making something personal.
2) Take the less traveled road
Usually we look at functionality or fashion when we buy gifts. Think of the He/She-has-everything person as your ticket to picking gifts that are unusual. It could be a ‘regular’ gift, but with an unusual touch. Want to give flowers? Okay. How about gifting a year-long custom bouquet delivery service? Your uncle likes the outdoors? Try an interesting fire pit. A movie buff? Get them a poster of their favorite film, with their face on it!
3) Share a laugh
Everyone needs a guffaw, everyone. It could something as simple as a funny t-shirt or hilarious card. Or you could try a personalized magazine cover: Man of the Year! or maybe a fake Oscar statuette. Remember to make the humor personal – pick on their quirks or habits. Fashion fanatic? Try monogrammed toilet paper!
4) Gift an experience
Chef for a day? Maybe try a hand at para-sailing. Gift a weekend of volunteering for a preferred charity. A personal one-on-one workshop on belly dancing. The idea is to get them to do/learn something that they would like to do, but don’t have time for. And for a truly exclusive experience, you could buy them a piece of land on Mars or name a star after them!
