It was the age of lavish, decadent and extravagant parties. A time when flapper dresses shimmered and sparkled alongside champagne towers. A coming together of bow ties and pearl strands, of gold and black and white and dancing to Jazz.
Baz Luhrmann’s rendition of the ‘Great Gatsby’ earlier this year may not have set the box office on fire, but the excitement about the opulent decade the film celebrates and its legendary parties, lingers on.
Get into the spirit by throwing an unforgettable party, with lively music, decadent food and champagne!
Take inspiration from Art Deco ideas for a deluxe touch to your party. While you don’t necessarily have to build a champagne tower, it’s a great idea to have light streamers, center pieces for tables, and touches of black and gold. You could also try scattering around a few mason jars with candles in them as well as feathers and put up fresh flowers in long stem vases that have pearl strands draped on them. And because all your guests have played dress-up, capture the moment for them! Create a faux backdrop reminiscent of the Twenties that guests could pose with, or have a photo booth with props such as moustaches or masquerade masks. Remember to pick some of the lively music that the swinging era was famous for.
The food & drinks
Period-appropriate drinks are a great way to usher in the time travel mode. Although the 1920s were part of the Prohibition era, popular drinks then included gin fizz, penicillin and lots of champagne. It’s easy to get overwhelmed while looking up food ideas from this decade, especially if you’re planning to prepare it all by yourself. Just remember to make several bite-sized appetizers, a heavy main course, light salad and finish with a lemon-flavored or chocolate dessert. Give some thought to what you will serve your food and drinks in, for an instant vintage feel.
To recreate the aura of the Twenties, try one of these popular looks: bobs, wavy hairdos, deep red lipstick, art deco accessories (especially jeweled head bands) as well as accessories with feathers and long strands of pearls. Soft, shimmering dresses, as well as long gloves complete the flashback! Men can take inspiration from the great Jay Gatsby himself, although a pink suit may not be everybody’s idea of indulgence. A smoking jacket, formal trousers, brogues, bow tie or bowler hat, and there, you’re a style icon!
